Glee creator Ryan Murphy has suggested that the second season will be more "intimate". Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that he wants the new episodes of the show to include fewer songs. "The second season will be more intimate and quieter with less musical numbers," he said. "People expect that we're going to keep trying to top ourselves and out-Madonna ourselves. But we're actually doing the opposite of that." Murphy added that he is excited about exploring the show's characters in more depth. "I love the characters we've created," he said. "I love that I'm doing a whole episode around Heather Morris . We've finished a couple of the scripts and I love them even more than I did the first season. I just think they're more emotional and funnier." The second season of Glee will premiere on September 21 on Fox.

CBS has confirmed that it has ordered Chaos for midseason. The network originally planned to pick up the drama in May but talks with producers 20th Century Fox TV eventually broke down. However, recent rumours suggested that the negotiations had started again. Deadline has now reported that CBS has ordered 13 episodes of the series. The show, which is executive produced by Brett Ratner and Tom Spezialy, focuses on a group of rogue CIA operatives and stars Ugly Betty and Six Feet Under star Freddy Rodriguez. Eric Close, James Murray, Tim Blake Nelson and Carmen Ejogo have also agreed to appear in the drama even though their options expired last month. Chaos will be CBS's second new midseason drama alongside the new spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour.

The executive producer of Bones has revealed that he would love Eric Millegan to reprise his role as Zack. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Stephen Nathan admitted that he does not expect Millegan to return to the show. "We love Eric and would like him to return," he said. "But we have no immediate plans yet. Of course, it's always about juggling schedules now that Eric is back in NYC and busy entertaining the masses in the Big Apple." However, he added: "The season is young and it remains a possibility." Bones returns for a new season on September 23 on Fox.

CBS has picked up a new chatshow featuring Julie Chen as a host. The project, which is allegedly an attempt to rival ABC's The View, was first announced in April. Entertainment Weekly reports that CBS has now decided to order the programme for the fall season. Chen, who hosts Big Brother, will be joined by Sharon Osbourne, Sara Gilbert, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini and Marissa Jaret Winokur on the panel. The women are expected to discuss topical issues from a mother's point of view. The show will also feature interviews with entertainers and people in the news. "Daytime is an evolving daypart with more variety now among soap operas, game and talkshows," CBS's senior vice-president of daytime Barbara Bloom said. "We are looking for a new format that would speak to the core audience but also have the topical and entertainment value to go even broader. "This panel is not a bashful bunch - they are outspoken on any issue you put on the table. It promises to be an hour of television with timely discussions, unfiltered opinions and a lot of personality." The programme will replace soap As The World Turns, which was cancelled last year.

Shoshannah Stern has reportedly joined the cast of Lie To Me. According to Entertainment Weekly, the former Jericho star has landed a recurring role in the upcoming third season. Stern is expected to play a student who is hired to help Tim Roth's character Dr Lightman with his book. Lightman allegedly warms to Stern's character despite his colleagues' fears that her deafness will cause problems. The third season of Lie To Me will premiere on November 10 on Fox.

Private Practice actress Caterina Scorsone will return to the show as a series regular next season.

Scorsone - who plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd on the medical drama - told TV Guide that she was pleased with her promotion.

"It's so fantastic for so many reasons," she said. "The set is really a wonderful environment. Everyone is generous and fantastic, so to know that's going to be my home for a while is pretty nice."

Scorsone's character is sister to Grey's Anatomy doctor Derek Shepherd (played by Patrick Dempsey), though the pair have never been seen together on screen.

The actress revealed that she is keen to work with Dempsey, saying: "It is a little bit intimidating, knowing how passionate people are, wanting to honour their expectations in the relationship with Derek, who is so deeply a part of people's emotional journey on this show."

Shonda Rhimes, creator of both series, confirmed that a meeting between the two characters is in the works.

"We've absolutely been talking about that," she said. "Based on the history we've already established between Amelia and Derek, there definitely has to be some sort of encounter at some point."

Private Practice will return to ABC for a fourth season on September 23.

US network AMC and Lionsgate TV are reportedly in talks to extend drama series Mad Men to a sixth season and possibly beyond.

The fourth season of the show will premiere July 25 on the network. AMC's current deal with Lionsgate reportedly runs through to a potential fifth season. According to Variety, executives from both sides are now in talks to extend the contract for at least one more season.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner's current deal with Lionsgate expires at the end of the fourth season. Lionsgate is said to be keen to work out a financial deal for future seasons with AMC before setting out a new contract with the writer.

While Lionsgate have the option to take the show to another network, sources report that both sides are keen for the programme to remain at AMC.

In a statement, AMC said: "We never comment on ongoing negotiations. Right now our major focus is on launching season four on July 25."

Lionsgate's president of television Kevin Beggs added that the studio "looks forward to Mad Men being on the air for many years to come".

Monique Curnen has reportedly joined the cast of Lie To Me.

Deadline says that the actress has landed a major recurring role in the show's upcoming third season.

She is expected to play Detective Wallowski, who becomes a love interest for Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth).

Her character will reportedly cause conflict between Lightman and Dr. Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams).

The third season of Lie To Me will premiere on November 10 on Fox.

Christina Hendricks has suggested that the women on Mad Men will be different this year.

Hendricks, who plays Joan, explained that the show's female characters will begin to change.

"I think that the women on the show look different this year," she told E! Online. "The three women on the show are so dramatically different. And they all change depending on the circumstances that are happening in their lives."

Elisabeth Moss added that her character Peggy will start to develop, saying: "She's definitely growing up and she's definitely embracing her role as a woman in the workplace.

"She's gotten a little tougher, and she's gotten a little more confident, but at the same time she's still very much Peggy."

I don't know what these are or if they're of interest, but they were about, so I've added them.

Glenn Close has revealed that she is pleased Damages has been renewed. The show had been close to cancellation, but DirecTV announced earlier this week that it has ordered two new seasons. Close, who plays Patty Hewes, has now told Entertainment Tonight that she is pleased with the news. "It's very exciting to still be teamed with KZK and Rose while going into new territory with DirecTV," she said. "Damages is a great ride and Patty is a character who continues to fascinate me. I'm proud of the show and grateful for Sony's undying support." The next season of Damages is expected to air in 2011.

Thank goodness for DirecTV with this, and "Friday Night Lights". However, in this instance, it will not be shown elsewhere after its run, so I will have to wait for the DVD. So I guess I can expect to see it in 2012. :-P Truthfully, "Damages" did quite a nice job wrapping up Season 3 that it wouldn't have been horrible if that were the end. However, I am certainly eager to see where they go now.

Those were interesting, though there are quite a few spoilers in there. Lots of "Glee" on there. That "Sons of Anarchy" steamy moment was great.

It's hard to avoid spoilers when you don't see the show as it airs, like I found out about "Dexter" a while back and that season's not out on DVD/BD yet.

So you're not watching Glee as it airs, EP? I know I post a lot of Glee stuff, but partly I do that because I thought you were watching it.

Is anyone else watching it? I don't, but if EPlayer's not watching it as broadcast, then I'd leave it out of my updates.

I have to be honest. I find this list to be upside down.

Best Drama
House (44.9%)
Lost (12.5%)
Grey's Anatomy (9.7%)
True Blood (6.4%)
Supernatural (5.3%)
The Vampire Diaries (3.8%)
Dexter (3.7%)
Friday Night Lights (3.5%)
Smallville (2.8%)
Bones (2.5%)
Mad Men (2.0%)
Sons of Anarchy (1.3%)
Fringe (1.0%)
Damages (0.5%)
The Good Wife (0.2%)

Who voted for this? All the good stuff at the bottom, with the crap up top. OK, calling House "crap" may be a little harsh, but it's formulaic, episodic nonsense for the most part. I watched the last season with my back to it, on the computer, just picking up plot points, as when I did watch it, I usually got bored pretty quickly. Unless Cuddy was onscreen, of course. ;)

Yes, I do watch "Glee" as it airs. One of the shows I try to watch live in HD. (Whereas I record most other shows and watch in 4:3 standard.) Javier Bardem should be interesting as a guest star. I'm probably in the minority, but I HATE, HATE, HATE the character of Emma.

But other shows which are on cable/pay channels I have to wait for the DVD/BD (and even then, I'm behind) like "Supernatural", and "Dexter". I haven't started watching "True Blood" yet, and will be watching "The Vampire Diaries" eventually on disc. It's just impossible to keep up. I haven't even begun "The Tudors".

And "Sons of Anarchy" returns in about a month. Looking forward to that.

Ah, ok then. I'll keep posting Glee news, then.

Season 2 of SOA finished a couple of weeks ago over here. Very good, though I was a little uninvolved with the ending. I couldn't care less about the baby, but I wanted that guy DEAD!! :-x Adam Arkin was so good, I hated him so much. I'm guessing he'll make an appearance in season 3, though I don't want to know as I like to watch it unspoilt. Season 4 of Dexter should be starting soon, too and it's about bloody time. It's been delayed for a few months now and I don't know why but it's bloody annoying.

I'll post some more USTV news later. :)

Emma Caulfield has reportedly landed a role in Life Unexpected. According to Give Me My Remote, the former Buffy The Vampire Slayer star will appear in the show's upcoming second season. She is expected to play the boss of Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) at his father's investment firm. Her character is said to be a smart career woman who is unhappy about the fact that Baze has been able to join the company because of his father. However, the pair reportedly strike up a friendship. Shaun Sipos and Amy Price-Francis have also signed up to appear in the show. Life Unexpected will return for its second season on September 14 on The CW.

AMC has announced that a number of actors have signed up to appear in The Walking Dead. The network confirmed that Norman Reedus has joined the cast as Daryl Dixon. Daryl's brother, former prisoner Merle, will be played by Jumper star Michael Rooker. The characters are said to be dangerous 'rednecks'. AMC also announced that Andrew Rothenberg, Juan Pareja, Iron E. Singleton, Jeryl Prescott Sales, Melissa McBride and Adam Minarovich have joined the show as members of the survivors' camp. The Walking Dead is currently in production and is scheduled to air on AMC in October.

Andrea Roth has been cast as Tom Selleck's love interest in upcoming CBS police drama Blue Bloods. The actress will replace Damages star Wendy Moniz, who played the role in the original unaired pilot. Entertainment Weekly reports that Moniz was dropped from the show for "creative reasons" but that "no explanation was given for the recast". Rescue Me actress Roth will now reshoot the scenes in the pilot featuring the character before the series goes to air. The character is expected to recur throughout the season. CBS will air Blue Bloods - which also features former Boomtown star Donnie Wahlberg - on Fridays at 10/9c.

Joss Whedon has criticised US television networks for failing to embrace serialised storytelling on their shows. Speaking at a panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Whedon argued that the networks put their own preferences ahead of what viewers really want. "The networks will never admit that people want serialised shows." he told fans. The Buffy creator claimed that ABC drama Lost was a huge success because of its complex storytelling and long-running character arcs. "When Lost was huge, the networks still spoke against serialised storytelling. They see an easy cash cow in something like The Mentalist." He added: "With TV it's about appealing to the audience and the first audience is the networks." Whedon also confirmed at the event that he would direct Marvel's Avengers movie.

Toby Whithouse has revealed that he is not involved with the US remake of Being Human. The show's creator told UGO that he wants to focus on the third season of the UK series. "At the moment, I'm a happy bystander because, to be honest, we're still in production on season three and I'm still writing the last episode," he said. "So my priority is to the UK version. "And I'm more than happy for the people of the American marketplace to be handling the American version while I handle the UK version." Whithouse added that he isn't concerned about viewers confusing the two versions. "I trust that the audience is savvy enough to be able to tell the difference," he said. "Though I imagine that the weather in the American version will be better." Mark Pellegrino and Sam Witwer have both signed up to appear in the US remake of Being Human.

Katheryn Winnick has reportedly signed up to appear in the next season of Bones. Earlier, reports revealed that Booth (David Boreanaz) would have a new love interest in future episodes. He reportedly meets war correspondent Hannah Burley while serving in Afghanistan but she follows him back to Washington. Entertainment Weekly has now claimed that Winnick has landed the role of Hannah. She is expected to appear in roughly five episodes of the show, including the season premiere. Winnick has previously had roles in programmes including Law & Order: Criminal Intent, House, Criminal Minds and CSI. The sixth season of Bones will air on September 23 on Fox.

Ilsa will be "clearly in charge" of the team and "doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone". Varma previously played the traitorous Suzie Costello in the first series of Torchwood. She has also made a guest appearance on Bones and recently starred as the ex-wife of the title character in BBC crime drama Luther. Human Target will return to Fox for a second season of 13 episodes on September 24.

Julia Roberts's brother Eric has reportedly signed up to appear in the cast of Celebrity Rehab With Dr Drew. The actor, who is the father of Emma Roberts, has not confirmed what his addiction issues are despite being arrested in 1987 for cocaine and marijuana possession. The 54-year-old's publicist Chuck Jones told WENN: "It's not for anything serious. He's not hooked on prescription meds or hard drugs or anything like that." Roberts will join Janice Dickinson, Rachel Uchitel, Jeremy London and Jason Wahler on the fourth season of the reality series. The show will air on VH1 later this year.

Veteran film actor Alfred Molina has joined the cast of the upcoming Law & Order: Los Angeles. The 57-year-old actor, whose film credits include Spiderman 2 and An Education, will take on the role of Deputy District Attorney Morales in the latest edition of the long-running crime drama franchise. The show's creator, Dick Wolf, released a statement on Saturday saying that he was "thrilled" to have Molina join the new spin-off. The only other confirmed cast member thus far is former Jericho actor Skeet Ulrich, who will take on the role of Detective Rex Winters. A number of high-profile stars, including Lucy Liu and Michael Rapaport, are also reportedly being considered for roles. Law & Order: Los Angeles will premiere this fall on NBC.

The producers of upcoming AMC zombie drama The Walking Dead have hinted that the show's episodes may be available in black and white on an eventual DVD release. While the original Image Comics series on which the show is based is printed in black and white, the television adaptation will be in colour. Gale Ann Hurd confirmed at Comic-Con that a monochrome version of the show had been considered. "We tested other cameras," she explained. "But the best for The Walking Dead was Super 16." However, Hurd and showrunner Frank Darabont teased that a DVD release of the show may include black and white versions of episodes as a bonus feature. Darabont also promised that the new series will be "faithful" to the original comics. The Walking Dead will premiere on AMC in October.

Halle Berry and Paul Rudd are to appear in upcoming episodes of The Simpsons. The show's executive producer Al Jean revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the Monster's Ball and Role Models actors will guest star in two future episodes when the long-running comedy returns for its 22nd season in September. Oscar-winning Berry will appear as herself in an episode where Homer and Bart win an Academy Award of their own, while Rudd's episode will see him take on the role of a therapist that tries to break Homer of his long-standing strangling habit. Jean explains: "For 20 years we’ve shown Homer strangling Bart and we’ve never had anybody go, ‘Oh, that’s horrible! So Paul Rudd goes, ‘That’s terrible!’ and he tries to cure him.” Other upcoming Simpsons guest stars include Flight Of The Conchords duo Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, Mad Men star Jon Hamm and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Oprah Winfrey has reportedly offered Sarah Ferguson her own chatshow. According to The Mirror, Winfrey wants Ferguson to host a programme on the Oprah Winfrey Network when it launches next year. Winfrey allegedly called Ferguson personally to offer her the primetime series. "Oprah is impressed by Sarah's ability to reinvent herself," a source said. "They spoke in person and, for Sarah, the offer is a ray of light at the end of a very dark tunnel." Ferguson appeared on Winfrey's own show earlier this year after she was filmed offering access to her ex-husband Prince Andrew for money. Previous reports have suggested that Ferguson's planned US chatshow was dropped because of the scandal.

Whishaw has reportedly been cast in Alan Ball's new project for HBO. Ball, who created Six Feet Under and True Blood, announced All Signs Of Death earlier this month. The pilot is based on the Charlie Huston novel The Mystic Arts Of Erasing All Signs Of Death and focuses on a crime scene cleaner. Entertainment Weekly has now claimed that Whishaw has landed the role of the cleaner, Webster Fillmore Goodhue. Whishaw has previously starred in Bright Star, Brideshead Revisited, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and the BBC drama Criminal Justice.

A former designer of Anna Nicole Smith has reportedly started looking for a lookalike of the model. A new reality TV show will see Frank Rodriguez hunt for a woman with Smith's measurements so he can design dresses for her. Producers told TMZ that the designer plans to shoot his search next week at a casting in Los Angeles. The winner will get to model the new creations. Rodriguez previously appeared on Smith's The Anna Nicole Show.

Liam Neeson has signed to make a guest appearance on upcoming comedy-drama The Big C. The actor - currently appearing on the big screen in the new A-Team movie - will feature in an episode of the Showtime series, which stars Laura Linney as a cancer-stricken school teacher. The programme will also feature Oliver Platt as Linney's immature husband. Other actors confirmed to make an appearance in the show's first season include former star of The Wire Idris Elba and Sex And The City actress Cynthia Nixon. The Big C is due to premiere on August 16. Dreamgirls director Bill Condon helmed the pilot episode.

Mad Men's fourth season got off to a strong start last night (26th July) with 2.9m for AMC, early viewing figures show. 'Public Relations', which saw Don's secretive ways backfire on him, pulled in a series high for the period drama, eclipsing season three's premiere rating by 100k. Over on the main networks, Big Brother picked up a decent 7.23m (2.5) for CBS at its usual time of 8pm, after which repeats of Undercover Boss and The Good Wife took 4.67m (1.4) and 3.58m (0.8). Family Guy repeats held up for Fox at 9pm, with 4.69m (2.3) and 5.08m. Prior to that, more animated comedy repeats aired on the network, with 3.83m (1.7) and 3.75m (1.7) watching The Simpsons and The Cleveland Show. It was a miserable evening for ABC, as The Gates fell to 2.89m (0.9) at 10pm - while earlier - a repeat of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and a new episode of Scoundrels had 4.36m (1.2) and 3.1m (0.6). Elsewhere, a repeat of Law & Order: Criminal Intent fetched 4.25m (0.8) for NBC, then a two-hour repeat of America's Got Talent entertained 3.8m (1).

Britney Spears may make a cameo appearance in Glee, it has been rumoured. The show's creator Ryan Murphy confirmed at Comic-Con that the singer will be given a "hallucenogenic" tribute episode which will focus on Brittany (Heather Morris). Cosmopolitan quotes Murphy as saying: "I sort of don't want to say what we're doing yet because it's not airing until September but we're paying tribute to her in a fun and unexpected way. "The entire episode is Mr Schuester (Matthew Morrison) saying, 'I don't want to do Britney! I don't want to do Britney!' We're doing it in a really fun, hallucenogenic way." Asked whether Britney would be making an appearance in the special, Murphy added: "I can't say. Isn't that terrible? That will launch 1,000 stories!" Glee returns for its second season on Fox from September.

Actor Gabriel Macht has reportedly joined the cast of new USA Network drama A Legal Mind. The show will follow Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), an intelligent but unmotivated college student who is hired by a top Manhattan law firm. Entertainment Weekly reports that Macht, who played the title role in 2008 comic book adaptation The Spirit, will play Harvey, "a brilliant, successful, and charming attorney" who works for the firm. Macht also starred in short-lived NBC drama The Others in 2000. Bourne Identity director Doug Liman will serve as executive producer on the new show.

Actress Susan Saradon has joined the cast of new HBO pilot The Miraculous Year. Entertainment Weekly reports that the Oscar winner will play musical director and choreographer Patty Atwood in the Broadway-set series. The show will see Norbert Leo Butz play a manipulative Broadway composer who is forced to juggle his dysfunctional family and a new musical production. It was previously announced that Pushing Daisies actor Lee Pace and former Law & Order star Linus Roache had agreed to appear in the project. Hope Davis, Frank Langella and Elaine Cassidy will also star. The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow will produce the show and direct the pilot episode.

NBC has confirmed that Steve Carell will be bowing out of The Office next year. Carell, 47, had previously announced in May that he would not be reprising his role as boss Michael Scott. NBC's primetime entertainment president Angela Bromstad announced that Carell will stay with the show until the end of season seven. She said in a statement: "We've been lucky to have had him as long as we've had. These things happen when you have such a major movie star in a show. "Not to diminish the departure of Steve, because that will impact the show, but we have tremendous faith in the writers and actors to keep it alive." Meanwhile, executive producer and supporting cast member Paul Lieberstein revealed that hiring a new big-name star is a possibility, though "not the front-running idea". Lieberstein continued: "Right now, we're still talking about a lot of scenarios. We're trying to get a sense of what the office is like without Steve. We want to be real. What would this office really do? We want to pursue this as honestly as Dunder Mifflin would."

Marg Helgenberger has announced that she is leaving CSI after ten years. The 51-year-old actress, who plays Catherine Willows in the long-running police drama, has already cut back on her appearances in season eleven. She told TV Guide: "I asked to do less episodes, so I am doing only 19. CBS wanted me to stay longer, but it was on terms I didn't find agreeable. "I wanted to do 13 and be finished by Christmas, but they wouldn't go for it. I'm thinking of this as my last 19 episodes." Helgenberger, who considered her future on the series earlier this year, also revealed that she recently accepted a pay cut. "CBS was also using the poor economy as a way to pull in the reins, so honestly all of us took pay cuts this year," she said. "Because I'm doing , I won't be making as much. Plus, I negotiated to do a few episodes in which I'm only working three days, so the salary was adjusted. Apart from the money, I wasn't quite ready to let go of the character and the people I work with." CSI, which also stars Laurence Fishburne and George Eads, returns to CBS in September.

Writers Jeff and Jackie Filgo have departed ABC's upcoming Danny Wallace sitcom Awkward Situations For Men. The network is currently producing a reworked pilot for the show, which is based on Wallace's book of the same name. Deadline reports that both writers, who also served as executive producers on the original pilot, have now left the project. Danny Wallace confirmed to DS that the pair's exit had been amicable. He explained: "I'm happy to say absolutely nobody quit Awkward Situations for Men, though we are, together with producer David Heyman, building an exciting new team. One which I'm pretty certain will not lead to any awkward situations of its own!" The new comedy will follow Wallace as he moves to the US with his wife, only to discover that his everyday behavior clashes with American values and gets him into trouble. Arrested Development star Tony Hale and That '70s Show actress Laura Prepon will also appear. Wallace previously admitted that working on the comedy was "surreal".

Actress Leah Remini has signed a new talent deal with television network CBS. Under the terms of the contract, she will develop a new scripted comedy project for the channel. Remini previously starred alongside Kevin James in long-running CBS sitcom The King of Queens. The network also recently announced that she will co-host a new chatshow, touted as a rival to ABC's The View. Remini previously held a talent deal at ABC, where she filmed unaired comedy pilot It Takes a Village.

Common has reportedly landed a role in Hell On Wheels. The rapper is the first person to be cast in the AMC project, Deadline reports. The show, which has been described as an historical western, focuses on the creation of the transcontinental railroad and is set in the 1860s. Common is expected to play Elam, a freed slave who arrives in the west looking for work. AMC's senior vice-president of programming Joel Stillerman said: "Common brings a layered intensity to a very complex role. This part required someone who can transcend the stereotypes of the period and bring the character to life in a truly unique way, and he brings that." Production for the Hell On Wheels pilot is expected to begin in August.

Cheyenne Jackson has joined the season two cast of Glee, reports claim. According to Entertainment Weekly, the 30 Rock cast member will play rival singing coach Shelby Corcoran, succeeding Wicked actress Idina Menzel. However, despite being seemingly replaced at Vocal Adrenaline, Menzel's character will apparently continue to make occasional appearances due to being Rachel's biological parent. Jackson recently landed a recurring guest stint in HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Felicia Day has reportedly landed a role in Eureka. The actress made the announcement at this year's Comic-Con event, The Hollywood Reporter says. Day, who admitted that she is excited about the role, will allegedly appear in ten episodes of the show. She also hinted that she could be a love interest for guest star Wil Wheaton, who recently tweeted that he will return later this season. Day has previously appeared in shows including Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, House and Lie To Me. Eureka's executive producer Jaime Paglia recently revealed that Day was one of his dream guest stars, adding that it was a "long shot".

Enrique Murciano has reportedly left ABC's new drama Off The Map. The series, produced by Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, focuses on a small medical clinic in the South American jungle. Murciano played Manny Diaz in the pilot but Entertainment Weekly reports that he has now been dropped from future episodes. The decision was allegedly made for creative reasons and the role is not expected to be recast. Last week, former Twilight star Rachelle Lefevre signed up to join the show.

Politicians in Detroit are reportedly concerned about the representation of the city in one of ABC's new series. According to The AP, some city council members have asked the makers of police drama Detroit 1-8-7 to attend a meeting to discuss the show. Councillor Kwame Kenyatta said: "The title itself is very negative - Detroit murder. What they are using as a hook is Detroit as a murder capital, where we manufacture murder as part of an assembly line." Meanwhile, community worker Luther Keith claimed that the show ignores the positive sides of the city. "While this might be a series about solving homicides in Detroit, we hope that it recognises there is more to Detroit than homicides," he said. "It's a reasonable expectation, at least to have one foot in the reality of Detroit. There are people who live, work here and enjoy this community who aren't touched by homicides." Representatives for the show have reportedly not yet commented on the news. Detroit 1-8-7 premieres on September 21 on ABC.

The new season of Sons Of Anarchy will be partially set in Ireland. The show's executive producer Kurt Sutter made the announcement at Comic-Con, E! Online reports. In the programme's second season finale, Jax's son Abel was kidnapped by Cameron Hayes and the cast explained that their characters will travel to Ireland as part of their attempts to find him. Ron Perlman, who plays Clay, said: "We are obsessively and unrestingly trying to find the kid and answer this horrific violation." Meanwhile, Charlie Hunnam, who stars as Jax, added: "Our pursuit of Abel really breaks open the world. John Teller had a lot to do with Ireland and the origin of gun running and the Sons Of Anarchy. So it's through us going to Ireland, inevitably, we learn a little bit more." Sutter also revealed that Lost star Titus Welliver will return as the True IRA leader Jimmy O for at least eight episodes. The new season of Sons Of Anarchy will premiere on September 7 on FX.

Wallace and Gromit will reportedly appear in an upcoming episode of The Simpsons. According to the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Al Jean announced the news at Comic-Con. Jean, who claimed that there is "no end in sight" for the cartoon, also revealed that Hugh Laurie and some of the cast of Glee will be making an appearance. He added that this year's Christmas special will see the Simpson family as puppets. Halle Berry, Paul Rudd, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and Mad Men's Jon Hamm have also agreed to work on the show.

William Baldwin has joined the cast of Parenthood, according to reports. Entertainment Weekly understands that the Dirty Sexy Money actor will be introduced as Adam's (Peter Krause) corporate boss. Aside from that, the character will apparently start a romantic endeavour with Sarah, who is played by Lauren Graham. NBC has so far declined to comment on the reports. However, rumours suggest that Baldwin will appear in multiple episodes of the dramedy, which returns in September.

CBS has revealed the names of four companies that will be taking part in the next season of Undercover Boss. The show follows executives as they go undercover and work alongside their employees. At the end of each episode, the boss reveals their true identity and rewards their hard-working colleagues. CBS has now announced that NASCAR senior vice-president Steve Phelps and DirecTV's chairman Mike White will both take part in the new season. Fernando Aguirre, the chairman of marketer Chiquita Brands International Inc., and Great Wolf Resorts CEO Kimberly K. Schaefer have also agreed to appear on the programme. Executive producer Stephen Lambert said: "We're thrilled with this season's new batch of bosses. The companies are some of the best known brands in corporate America and clearly - with the likes of NASCAR, Chiquita, DirecTV and Great Wolf Resorts - we've got an interesting blend of industries." The new season of Undercover Boss will premiere on September 26 on CBS.

Stephen McPherson has quit his role as entertainment chief for ABC after reportedly being given an ultimatum by the company. Entertainment Weekly reports that the executive, who headed the division since 2004, was forced to resign by the network after a poor 2009-10 performance. McPherson said in a statement: "I want to thank the wonderful team of individuals who have worked with me throughout my time here and wish them nothing but the best." According to Nielsen, the network finished the season down 3%, tying with NBC for third place among adults 18-49. McPherson helped to build the success of Lost and Modern Family, but failed to maintain the popularity of shows like Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. FlashForward was cancelled after just one season.

Actress Rachel Bilson is to make a second guest appearance on CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. The series follows Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), who in the year 2030 recounts to his children the events that led him to meeting their mum. Former O.C. star Bilson previously featured in an episode of the show's fifth season as Cindy, the future mother's roommate. Entertainment Weekly reports that she will reprise her role in the upcoming sixth season premiere, when Cindy arrives at MacLaren’s bar, a favourite haunt of the show's characters. Series creator Carter Bays said: “The season premiere is going to be very much informed by presence.” The new season of How I Met Your Mother will begin on CBS on September 20.

Eric Christian Olsen has been promoted to regular status in the cast of NCIS: LA, CBS has confirmed. Shane Brennan, the police drama's executive producer, announced that the former Brothers & Sisters actor has "proven himself" in the recurring role he played last season as LAPD liaison Marty Deeks. "We are thrilled to have Eric join the cast," said Brennan in a statement. "He has already proven himself to be a great asset and invaluable member of the team, and Eric's fans will be delighted to see what we have in store for him." NCIS: LA's second season kicks off with a two-hour episode on September 21.

Paul Giamatti has reportedly been cast in a new television movie from cable network HBO. The actor - who previously won an Emmy for playing the title role in HBO mini-series John Adams - will play former Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev in the film, reports Variety. The project will be adapted from the Peter Carlson book K Blows Top, which follows Khruschchev on a two-week tour of the United States. Hollywood star Tom Hanks will co-produce the film, alongside Paul Bernbaum, Perri Kipperman and David Stern. Bernhbaum, writer of the 2007 Nicholas Cage movie Next, will also write the script. The project is still in the early stages, with no other cast currently signed.

CBS has announced that it will introduce new gay characters into three of its shows. The news comes after the broadcaster scored the lowest rating of any major network in a recent inclusivity survey by the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD). Entertainment president Nina Tassler explained to reporters at the recent Television Critics Association press tour that CBS was working on improving its portrayal of gay and transgender people. "We're disappointed in our track record so far," she said. "We're going to do it. We're not happy with ourselves." Gay characters will reportedly be introduced to new William Shatner comedy $#*! My Dad Says, returning sitcom Rules of Engagement and legal drama The Good Wife. CBS scored just 7% in the GLAAD poll, compared to top-scoring network The CW's 35%.

The Bachelorette attracted 8.9 million viewers for ABC on Tuesday (28th), early viewing figures show. Airing from 8pm to 10pm, the reality show's 'Men Tell All' special grabbed 8.86m (2.9). 20/20 followed on the network with 6.01m (1.8), beating rival programme Dateline, as NBC took 5.47m (1.7) for the current affairs broadcast. However, it was a repeat of CSI: Miami which took the 10pm slot, with 6.21m (1.6). Elsewhere, Lie To Me took 5.51m (1.6), putting Fox into second place at 8pm. Gale Ann Hurd has confirmed that the cast and crew of The Walking Dead are planning for a second season. The producer told Comic Book Resources that she hopes the show will continue beyond its initial six-episode run. "We have to get through these first six episodes and then we'll take a breath, the series will launch, and hopefully we'll get extended to a second season," she explained. "In which case, we get the opportunity to take it to 13 episodes." She promised that producer/director Frank Darabont is committed to the long-term future of the series. "You've never seen someone as committed as Frank is to this," she said. "He isn't directing... all . He isn't directing all of , either. There's really no time to do all of that on this kind of schedule, because he's very heavily involved not only in the writing but also in the editorial process." Hurd also revealed that she was pleased to be the launching The Walking Dead within AMC's 'FearFest' line of programming. "It's actually their highest rating block of programming in terms of viewers, with classic genre films. We're launching in that window and it's actually the perfect time," she said. The Walking Dead debuts on AMC in October.

USA Network drama In Plain Sight has been renewed for two more seasons. Deadline reports that the show - which stars Mary McCormack as a US Marshal working in the Witness Protection Programme - will return for a fourth and fifth season. The main cast, including McCormack, Frederick Weller and Paul Ben-Victor, are all expected to return when filming resumes in New Mexico.

Season Three of the show ended on June 30, averaging a total of 5.2 million viewers. The move follows a similar two-year renewal for fellow USA drama Burn Notice earlier this year. The network is reportedly expected to announce more renewals over the next few weeks. MasterChef got off to a decent start last night (29th), with an average of 5.8 million viewers tuning in, early viewing figures show. 5.75m (2.7) watched the series premiere, which is co-hosted and produced by Gordon Ramsay. William Shatner has criticised CBS executives for renaming his new sitcom $#*! My Dad Says. The series, which is based on the Twitter feed 'S**t My Dad Says', was given a censored title in order to be suitable for television but Shatner admitted that he is unhappy with the decision, reports the New York Post. “I wish they would just call it ‘S**t’,” he said. “What's wrong with it?... I brought up three girls. They've all got kids. Okay? And you say, 'Boopy doo-doo, you've got to make poo-poo. Come on. Make poo-poo in the toilet'. Eventually, 'poo-poo' becomes 's**t'. 'Go take a s**t, and you'll feel better'. You say that to your kids." He continued: "The word 's**t' is around us. It isn't a terrible term. It's a natural function. Why are we pussyfooting?” Shatner recently revealed that the show will expand upon the original Twitter feed. $#*! My Dad Says will premiere on CBS on September 23.

Ellen DeGeneres has decided to leave her post as judge after only one year on American Idol. The comedian posted the announcement on her website on Thursday, stating that she felt the position wasn't the "right fit". "A couple months ago, I let Fox and the American Idol producers know that this didn't feel like the right fit for me. I told them I wouldn't leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next," she wrote. "It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realised this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings." DeGeneres added that she will continue to watch the show after her departure. "I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had. I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be." Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller added: "I loved Ellen's passion for the artists and her nurturing skills. She brought honesty and optimism to our judging panel and I will miss her greatly." The show's executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said: “We will miss Ellen, she has been the consummate professional throughout her time on the show, and she’ll always be part of the American Idol family.” Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment at Fox, said: “It was a joy to work with Ellen. She brought an incredible spirit to Idol and was a great new addition to the team. "While we’re saddened by her decision, we are very appreciative that she gave us ample notice so that we could work through it together.” Fellow judge Simon Cowell previously announced that he will not be returning to the programme in order to launch a US version of The X Factor in 2011.

BET has commissioned a new comedy pilot starring former Girlfriends actress Tracee Ellis Ross. Deadline reports that she will also produce Reed Between the Lines for the cable network. The pilot, written by Kellie Grffin, will star Ross as Dr Carla Reed, "a busy psychiatrist, wife and mum struggling to balance her job and her happy but chaotic homelife". Ross will serve as co-executive producer alongside Arthur Harris. Production is due to begin in Atlanta on August 11. BET - Black Entertainment Television - is also working on a number of other original scripted series, including the Queen Latifah-produced Let's Stay Together and Girlfriends spinoff The Game.

Jennifer Grey has signed up to guest star in an episode of House. According to Entertainment Weekly, the actress will appear on the show later this year. She is expected to play the mother of a young girl who is displaying the symptoms of a potentially fatal illness. When doctors investigate the daughter's condition, Grey's character has to make a difficult decision about her treatment. Grey has already started filming her role and her episode of House is expected to air in October.

Clayne Crawford has signed up to appear in Alan Ball's new pilot for HBO. All Signs Of Death, based on a Charlie Huston novel, focuses on a young man who ends up as a crime scene cleaner. Entertainment Weekly reports that Crawford has now joined the cast as the cleaner's best friend, a man who works in a tattoo parlour. Crawford previously played Kevin Wade in 24 and is currently starring in The Glades. Ben Whishaw has already been cast in the lead role in All Signs Of Death.

Corey Stoll has signed to star in upcoming NBC drama Law & Order: Los Angeles. The actor will join Skeet Ulrich on the spinoff, playing TJ Jaruszalski, the partner of Ulrich's Detective Rex Winters. Deadline describes Jaruszalski as "a confident Hollywood native with a cynical view of the entertainment industry". The character will also reportedly be portrayed as "a health nut with an active social life". Stoll starred in a 2006 episode of the original Law & Order series, and also appears in new Angelina Jolie film Salt. Spider-Man 2 star Alfred Molina was previously cast as deputy district attorney Peter Morales in the series. Law & Order: Los Angeles premieres on NBC on September 22.

Lost star Terry O'Quinn is to return to television for the first time since the ABC drama ended in May. E! Online reports that O'Quinn - who played John Locke on the show - will star alongside Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson in the Lifetime television movie Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story. The project will tell the story of Tiffany Rubin (Henson), a desperate mother forced to rescue her young son when he is kidnapped and taken to Korea by his father. In the film, O'Quinn will play Mark Miller, the head of charitable organisation The American Association for Lost Children, who helps Rubin travel to Korea to save her son. Production on the film will begin next month in Vancouver.

The Syfy network has announced that Malik Yoba and Laura Mennell will appear in upcoming drama Alphas. The pair join the previously cast David Strathairn in the show, which follows a team of ordinary people who develop brain anomalies and receive unusual mental and physical abilities. Yoba will play Bill Harken, a former FBI agent who possesses superhuman strength and speed, while Mennell will appear as Nina Theroux, a team member who can manipulate people's emotions. "Malik and Laura are perfect additions to an already impressive ensemble cast. They both have great intensity and charisma," said SyFy executive Mark Stern. "We look forward to seeing them breathe life into the complex characters of Harken and Nina." Yoba previously played astronaut Ted Shaw on space travel drama Defying Gravity, while Mennell appeared in 2009 film Watchmen. Production on the show's pilot is due to begin next month in Toronto, under the direction of former Lost executive producer Jack Bender.

McG has confirmed that a planned reboot of the Charlie's Angels franchise for television is still in the works. A new version of the series was originally announced in November last year. McG - real name Joseph McGinty Nichol - explained to Fancast that the project is still in development. According to the producer, Hollywood star Drew Barrymore, Nancy Juvoven and original series executive Leonard Goldberg “are working on it. They’re just waiting to see if the script comes together, and then we’ll talk about it”. Barrymore previously starred in the two Charlie's Angels feature films released in 2000 and 2003, which McG directed. He explained that the new series had been in development for the 2010-11 television season, but was later dropped. “Everybody’s very protective of the idea," he said. "You just want to get it right.” McG currently works as executive producer on The CW's new action-drama Nikita, due to premiere on September 9.

Kara DioGuardi has reportedly been fired from American Idol. According to TMZ, the show's judge will not appear on the next season because she has been let go by producers. The programme will apparently return to its original three-judge format next season, with Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler thought to be possible panellists. DioGuardi could return to the show if Lopez does not accept the offer. Ellen DeGeneres announced on Thursday that she was quitting the programme after one season.

The Cape star Summer Glau has revealed that her new character Orwell is different to roles she has played in the past. The actress found fame as the troubled River Tam in Joss Whedon's Firefly and later played Cameron in Fox series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Glau told KSiteTV: “I’ve always played kind of kick-ass girls, but Orwell’s different, because she’s on her own completely, and she obviously has a lot of resources that none of my other characters have had before, which is really fun." The show sees investigative blogger Orwell team up with superhero The Cape to face off against crime and corruption in Palm City. “I’m really exploring how it feels to play someone who really seems to have no fear," said Glau. "She’s going for it, going after these corporations and powerful men, and it’s different.” She explained that the series itself also contains certain elements that set it apart from other shows. “I love the quality of hope and the quality of humour in it,” she said. The Cape - which also stars David Lyons as the titular hero - has been commissioned by NBC as a midseason replacement.

Actress Lizzy Caplan is reportedly working with HBO to develop a new comedy series. The project will be based on the book I Don't Care About Your Band by Julie Klausner. The original memoir follows Klausner's experiences with men and dating while in her twenties. According to Deadline, the show will be produced by Gary Sanchez Productions, set up by Hollywood star Will Ferrell and Anchorman director Adam McKay. Ferrell and McKay will executive produce the project, while Caplan will also produce and star in the series. Caplan previously had a recurring role on HBO's supernatural drama True Blood. Earlier this month, she bemoaned the cancellation of her Starz comedy-drama Party Down.

Terrence Howard has joined the cast of NBC’s upcoming drama Law & Order: Los Angeles.

Howard will star alongside with Skeet Ulrich, Alfred Molina and Corey Stoll in the Law & Order spinoff, reports Deadline.

The Hustle and Flow actor will play a new Deputy DA on the show who works with Molina’s Deputy DA Morales.

Both actors will appear in half the episodes of the season in order to keep working in films and other projects.

The series premieres on September 22 on NBC.

The Big C's showrunner Jenny Bicks has compared the series to her previous project Sex And The City.

The Big C stars Laura Linney as a suburban mother who discovers that she has cancer.

"I actually feel like I'm reflexing some of the muscles I got to flex on Sex," Bicks told New York Magazine.

"There was definitely more of an aspirational quality to Sex And The City, and obviously no-one aspires to have cancer. It is a little different. But when you think about what Sex And The City was about, it was about the truth of relationships and the truth of friendships. It was very honest and real, so in that way this show is similar. This is probably more unadorned, though. We don't care a lot about the outfits."

Bicks also claimed that the show's writers are not afraid about dealing with the death of Linney's character.

"If it comes time that she goes, she goes," she said. "We're not going to be afraid of that. We don't have to sugarcoat the situation."

The Big C premieres on August 16 on Showtime.

Jennifer Love Hewitt has reportedly landed a guest role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

The former Ghost Whisperer star has signed to portray a woman who has been raped several times and is afraid to leave her home on the NBC drama, reports TV Guide.

The episode will air on September 29, said series executive producer Neal Baer.

"One of the reasons we wanted to do this episode is because it addresses Mariska Hargitay's passion for rape kits, which can help gather evidence to convict the rapists,” Baer said.

He added: “But for some reason these kits have been sitting around unopened in cities all over the country."

Plain Jane got off to a poor start last night, early viewing figures show.

The CW's new makeover series, hosted by Louise Roe, appealed to just 980k (0.4) - less than the 1.08m (0.4) who tuned in for an America's Next Top Model rerun earlier on the network.

Also during the 8pm hour, Big Brother managed 6.63m (2.2) for CBS, while Fox's So You Think You Can Dance entertained 5.34m (2), and Minute To Win It had 5.94m (1.8) for NBC.

Over on ABC, a double bill of The Middle amused 4.18m (1) and 4.04m (1.1), then Modern Family and Cougar Town fetched 4.07m (1.4) and 3.27m (1.1) at 9pm. Meanwhile, America's Got Talent took 9.52m (2.5) for NBC, and Criminal Minds notched up 6.29m (1.6) for CBS.

Only reruns aired at 10pm: Law & Order: SVU grabbed a respectable 4.78m (1.5) for NBC, CBS's CSI: NY was seen by 6.25m (1.3), and 3.54m (0.8) watched Castle on ABC.

Jennifer Aniston will reportedly appear on Courteney Cox's comedy show Cougar Town.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the actress is "nearing a deal" to guest star on an early episode of the second season.

Executive producer Bill Lawrence said: "I would love for it to happen, but there’s nothing to talk about yet."

In 2007, the 41-year-old guest starred on Cox's FX drama Dirt, while Lisa Kudrow appeared on an episode of Cougar Town last November.

Aniston recently said that she still holds on to the "funny moments" and "amazing memories" of her time on Friends.

B.J. Novak has signed a deal to stay with NBC comedy The Office for another two seasons. Variety reports that Novak's new contract will see him play Ryan Howard through the show's seventh and eighth seasons."

I did not watch the last season, but I think of the things that killed this show for me was having his character come back after being fired.

!!! QUOTE !!!

The seventh season of The Office - the last to feature current star Steve Carell - will premiere on September 23 on NBC.

He was the other reason I left the show and I might try to watch it again after he is gone.

I too wanted to know who voted for this stuff HK. I guess it was done by "E" hence the name but a lot of the winners are messed up. The one that really stepped out for me was the one for most missed show. How can Legend of the Seeker beat out both Lost and 24?

Maybe LoS beat Lost and 24 because both series had been on for a long time and both had, really, reached their natural conclusion. Of course, as I didn't watch any of them and don't know the audience of "E!", I could be completely wrong. :D
